Legislation Would Tighten Rules For Owning Wild Animals

Last updated on Tuesday, January 13, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A state leader is trying again to pass legislation that would tighten restrictions on ownership of exotic animals.

Under Senate Bill 226, exhibitors and breeders of animals such as bears, wild cats and wolves would be required to obtain a state permit and submit to annual inspections.

Senator Mike Crider says currently, exhibitors and breeders of these animals who have a federal permit are exempt from Indiana regulations.

Crider says, the goal is to ensure all animals are contained and kept under proper and safe conditions.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Natural Resources and Crider expects a hearing in the next week or two. Crider had proposed similar legislation in the past two years, but the bills never made it out of committee.
