(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana House committee members are set to discuss legislation that would require high school students to take the same test that immigrants must pass to become a U.S. citizen.
The bill is part of a growing nationwide effort to boost civics education. If passed, students would have to correctly answer 60 percent of the 100 questions on the U.S. citizenship test to graduate.
The Joe-Foss Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona, is behind the movement and hopes to have all 50 states adopt the law by 2017. Arizona was the first state to pass the legislation last Thursday. The institute said more than a dozen other states are expected to consider it this year.
The House Education Committee scheduled a hearing on the bill Tuesday morning in the Statehouse.
