Department of Revenue Offering Free Online Filing For Hoosier Taxpayers

Last updated on Tuesday, January 27, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Nearly two million Hoosier taxpayers could qualify to file their federal and state taxes online for free using Indiana freefile (INfreefile).

If a taxpayer has an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $60,000 or less for 2014, they may be eligible for INfreefile. Taxpayers should visit www.freefile.dor.in.gov to see if they qualify for the program based on the vendors' options. If they qualify, taxpayers simply click the vendor of their choice and complete their tax returns online using a sophisticated question and answer style format.

"Last year nearly 120,000 Hoosier taxpayers used INfreefile. Many more qualify for the free service. I encourage anyone who meets the basic criteria to investigate this option," said Mike Alley, Department of Revenue Commissioner.

This year, six vendors provide a fast, easy, and secure way to file taxes electronically. Vendors participating in INfreefile include 1040NOW, H&R Block, OLT Online Taxes, TaxACT, Tax Slayer, and Turbo Tax. Taxpayers must access these vendors via the IRS or state Free File website to use the free service.

Advantages to filing taxes electronically include:

Faster refunds - e-filed returns are processed in 10 to 14 days, while a paper return can take up to 12 weeks.
More secure - fewer people see your personal information.

Get more or pay less - e-filing software may suggest credits or deductions you might not have known about
More accurate - e-filed returns have a two percent error rate versus 20 percent for paper returns.
The Free File Alliance is a cooperative effort of the IRS, the states, and tax preparation software vendors. Indiana is one of 20 states that offer this service.

If taxpayers have questions about their tax return, they should contact the department online at www.in.gov/dor/3392.htm or call 317-232-2240.
