Police Shoot, Kill Armed Man In Parking Lot

Last updated on Wednesday, December 10, 2014

(LAKE STATION) - Three police officers shot and killed an 84-year-old Portage man in the parking lot of Lake Station City Hall yesterday morning after he allegedly fired a shotgun and pointed it at them.

Bob Byrd with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force says police were called to the parking lot of the municipal building for a report of a man with a shotgun. When the three officers arrived, John Laco allegedly discharged the weapon, then turned toward the officers.

Byrd said the officers then fired their weapons, striking and killing the man.

Byrd said about 20 detectives from departments around the region were working the case with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, including officers from the Lake County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police.
