Man Sentenced To 40 Years For 1993 Murder

Last updated on Monday, December 22, 2014

(LAPORTE) - A northern Indiana man convicted last month in the 1993 strangulation death of a 16-year-old girl who refused to date him has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

WSBT-TV reports that 39-year-old Jason Tibbs of LaPorte will spend at least 20 years in prison for the death of Rayna Rison under the sentencing laws in effect when she was killed.

Deputy LaPorte County Prosecutor Christopher Fronk had sought a 55-year sentence.

Tibbs said he had no condolences for the family because he wasn't guilty. He was arrested in August 2013 based on a tip from an inmate.

Rison's father, Ben Rison, says he hopes his family can now "find some semblance of peace" after all they've been through the past two decades.
