(PUTNAM CO.) - A western Indiana county’s chief sheriff’s deputy says federal agents who searched the department’s offices during a raid are auditing its participation in a military surplus program.
Chief Deputy Tom Helmer of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department tells The Tribune-Star FBI agents took only records related to that program during Monday's raid in Greencastle. He says the FBI's actions are "like an audit."
The sheriff's department has received more than $2.4 million in equipment through the program, which provides state and local police agencies with surplus military equipment intended for use in counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism operations and to improve officer's safety.
Helmer says Putnam County reserve deputy David Allison handles the department's participation in that program.
Neighbors say Allison's Morgan County residence was also searched Monday by federal agents
