Columbus Driver Dies After Gunshot

Last updated on Thursday, December 4, 2014

(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus man is dead after shooting himself in the head while driving Tuesday morning in Jennings County.

Maj. Jerry Shepherd, spokesman for the Jennings County Sheriff's Department, said deputies found 25-year-old Matthew Haberman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot in the wreckage of his crashed vehicle.

Shepherd said a deputy saw the vehicle driving eastbound on U.S. 50 yesterday at about 5:30 a.m. when the driver headed directly toward the deputy's patrol car. After swerving almost off the road to avoid the crash, the deputy saw the oncoming vehicle leave the road and roll several times before striking a parked truck and a building owned by Biehle Electric.

Deputies and the Jennings County Coroner concluded that Haberman shot himself before the crash.
