Last updated on Friday, November 7, 2014

(VINCENNES) - Veterans will be admitted free to the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy in Vincennes Nov. 6 through Nov. 12, with the exception of Nov. 11 when the Museum will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST) and Sunday, 12 - 5 p.m. The Museum is located adjacent to Vincennes University's Red Skelton Performing Arts Center located at 20 Red Skelton Blvd.

A veteran himself, Red Skelton's patriotism inspired him to entertain thousands of troops at military bases in the U.S. and abroad. He was part of the entertainment corps in WWII and also performed at rallies to advertise the sale of war bonds to help finance World War II. After the end of the Korean War, Red traveled abroad and entertained servicemen still posted at U.S. bases in Korea and Japan. He also visited war wounded at hospitals throughout his long comedy career

During his 84 years, Skelton starred in most entertainment genres -- from traveling medicine shows, showboats, the circus and Vaudeville to radio, television, and motion pictures during his 84 years. He appeared in 36 feature films, had a successful network radio program for 15 years, and starred in the Red Skelton Show, which ran for 20 years and remains the second longest-running entertainment program ever in network TV history.

Red performed for eight U.S. presidents and three Roman Catholic Popes, composed more than 8,000 songs, 64 symphonies, wrote books, and his paintings and drawings remain art collectors' treasures.

His other achievements include Emmy awards for performing, writing and his TV show, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for radio and television, and elections to the halls of fame for television, radio and clowns.
