Middle School Teacher Resigns After Allegedly Sending Sexually Explicit Messages To Students

Last updated on Thursday, November 13, 2014

(LAGRANGE) - A middle school teacher who also coached high school volleyball coach has resigned as the result of an investigation into sexually explicit messages he allegedly sent to students.

32-year-old Brent R. Miller of LaGrange had been employed as a teacher at Lakeland Middle School and as a girls volleyball coach at Lakeland High School. According to Lakeland School Corporation Superintendent Risa Herber, Miller had been employed there for seven years and he resigned immediately after the allegations surfaced.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department, between 11:30 pm on September 27 of this year and 5:30 am on September 28, Miller used social media to invite some student athletes to come drink with him. Miller also reportedly had sent a sexually explicit message to one or more of the same student athletes. Investigators also believe that earlier in the year Miller had also communicated in a sexually explicit manner with another student who had felt uncomfortable about the comments made to her.

The LaGrange County Prosecutor's Office has charged Miller with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of harassment.

Miller turned himself in to authorities and after being booked he was released on a $1,000 bond.

The Lakeland School Corporation and the Indiana State Police also cooperated in the investigation.
