Miami Co. K-9 Sniffs Out Drugs In Sheriff's Dept. Parking Lot

Last updated on Thursday, November 27, 2014

(PERU) - A new canine deputy is already making a name for himself in Miami County after a series of recent drug arrests and one of those arrests he didn’t have to go too far to help make.

Miami County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Gentile and his new canine partner Aik the Belgian Malamois have only worked together a few months, but Gentile is learning more everyday that even though his new partner has four legs and can't talk, Aik still has his back.

Aik was just doing his business, when the business of enforcing the law presented itself, unexpectedly. The pair had only been outside a few minutes when Aik suddenly took off running towards a truck in the parking lot.

"He basically made a beeline for that truck, actually jumped up on it," Gentile said.

That's where Gentile said Aik stayed, zeroed in on 47-year-old Duane Rutledge sitting inside the truck on the passenger side. The deputy said he knew Aik was trying to tell him he had picked up the scent of drugs in the truck, so Gentile questioned Rutledge and searched him.

"He admitted to smoking marijuana previously before coming to the sheriff's department," said Gentile. "During our pat down, we discovered around two grams of marijuana in his cigarette box. I walked him into the jail and booked him in."

He said it was one of the most efficient arrests he has ever made.

Gentile said this was the eighth drug arrest Aik has helped him make in the past three weeks.
