Arsenal Tech Student Pleads Guilty To Attempted Murder

Last updated on Friday, November 21, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The man accused of shooting an Arsenal Tech student near school June 3 pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted murder and to carrying a handgun.

19-year-old William Alvies fired six shots at the victim as she was leaving school for lunch that day, according to court documents released June 5. The 17-year-old was hit in the shoulder.

Alvies also pleaded guilty to auto theft stemming from a case back into 2013 for which he was out on bond on when he committed the Arsenal Tech crime.

Alvies' attorney, Mitchell Solomon, said Alvies decided to plead guilty because he realized he was not going to get a good deal if the case went to trial. The crime was caught on surveillance and there were numerous witnesses.

When they head to sentencing next month, Solomon says he plans to detail Alvies' mental health problems in hopes of getting the least amount of time possible.

Alvies could receive 20 to 50 years in prison on the attempted murder charge and a fine up to $10,000. On the handgun charge, he could receive up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. On the auto theft charge he gets time served.

The sentences will run concurrently and by law the judge cannot give any less than 20 years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 4th at 10:00 am.

The victim broke up with Alvies months before the shooting and had a restraining order against him after numerous threats, according to police. A neighbor heard the shots and said they saw Alvies run away and throwing the gun. Based on that witness information, police said they knew exactly where to find the weapon.

Alvies turned himself in a short time later and reportedly admitted to police he fired the gun, but said he didn't intend to hurt the girl. He said he knew her class schedule and when she went to lunch so he waited for her in the parking lot.
