(INDIANAPOLIS) - Monday, Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson announced the launch of an online smoke alarm pledge in partnership with Indiana fire departments, schools, and school corporations.

Marshal Greeson announced the pledge alongside firefighters and students at the Blue & Gold Academy in Indianapolis. Decatur Township firefighters and officials from the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township were also on hand to take the pledge and promote fire safety.

The pledge will be used as a tool to educate Hoosiers on the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

Those who sign the pledge are promising to have working smoke alarms on all levels in the home and outside of sleeping areas, to test the alarms at least once a month, and to spread knowledge about fire safety and prevention to family and friends.

The pledge was created to reinforce the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) fire prevention week theme of "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives."

"This pledge is a fun and simple way to educate and motivate Hoosiers to test smoke alarms and help ensure that families are protected in the event of a home fire," said Greeson.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of fire-related deaths in half. Last year, only nine other states had more home fire deaths than Indiana.

In 2014 alone, more than 40 individuals have died in Indiana home fires. Working smoke alarms are responsible for saving the lives of at least 70 individuals statewide this year.
