Public Memorial To Be Held In Honor Of Fallen Jockey

Last updated on Thursday, October 16, 2014

(SHELBYVILLE) - A brief memorial will be held today for the jockey killed in an accident during a race at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino.

17-year-old Juan Saez died from his injuries after being thrown from his horse Tuesday night.

John Schuster, Vice President and General Manager of Racing at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, says a memorial won't do Saez justice, but they wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on Saez and remember him as the "positive shining light" that he was.

Schuster says he has never dealt with a situation like this in his 40 years in horse racing, saying it was "stunning" and "heartbreaking." He says he can't recall seeing any jockey with a brighter start to a career than Saez.

Track activities were canceled Wednesday out of respect for Saez and his family.

Schuster says the public memorial is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and races will resume shortly after 2:00.
