(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Seventh Annual Court History and Continuing Legal Education Symposium will be presented on Friday, November 7, 2014, at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Court House, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis.
The program will be held in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom (Courtroom 202).
Sponsored by the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, this three‐hour Continuing Legal Education event (approval of credit pending) will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This year's event features three distinct sessions that will be of interest to attorneys, historians, and members of the public alike.
The first session, which will run from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., will feature court historian Doria Lynch telling the story of U.S. v. George Barrett, the Southern District of Indiana's first murder trial. The case, which was tried in the very courtroom in which the presentation will be made, resulted in a guilty verdict and imposition of the death sentence for Barrett's murder of federal agent Nelson B. Klein.
The second session, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., will focus on the United States Marshals Service and federal court forfeitures, seizures, and attachments. Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Dave Campbell will explain the duties and responsibilities of the Marshals Service both broadly and as relates to the seizure of property. He will be joined by C. Daniel Motsinger, Partner and Chair of Krieg DeVault LLP's Creditors' Rights and Bankruptcy Group, who will take a closer look at the laws surrounding forfeitures and attachments.
The final hour, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm, will be a celebration of the history of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Judge Basil H. Lorch III, Judge James M. Carr, and renowned bankruptcy attorneys Jerry Ancel and Elliott Levin will speak in a session moderated by Bankruptcy Clerk Kevin P. Dempsey about the history, triumphs, and tribulations of the court. Chief Judge Robyn L. Moberly may also appear. This will be a rare opportunity for the bench, bar, and public to take an inside look at a court that continues to evolve.

Members of the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana receive complimentary registration. For non‐members wishing to attend the event, the registration fee is $50 and includes a one year membership to the Court's Historical Society.
