(INDIANAPOLIS) - Lawyers say Indiana could soon see its first divorces of same-sex couples now that those marriages are legal in the state.
Indianapolis family law attorney Kathy Harmon says this month's federal court decisions mean that now there are no differences between how courts handle divorces of same-sex and opposite-gender couples.
Harmon tells The Indianapolis Star complications also could still arise if one divorcing same-sex partner had a child through adoption or artificial insemination and the other partner didn't do a second-parent adoption.
At least two same-sex divorce cases are pending in Marion County.
Gay-marriage ban supporter Micah Clark of the American Family Association of Indiana says he's not surprised at the filings of same-sex divorce cases because government approval of a relationship doesn't make it more stable.
