Last updated on Wednesday, September 17, 2014

(EVANSVILLE) - An Evansville woman is facing child neglect charges after police say her young child swallowed prescription drugs.

Evansville police say it happened on August 27.

Officers were called to St. Mary's hospital to check out a report about a child that had swallowed a schedule III drug.

Police say their investigation revealed that the child's mother, 27-year-old Carrie Ann Bastain, had left the pill on the kitchen counter of her Evansville home while she was talking on the phone.

During that time the child climbed up on the counter and swallowed the pill.

The Evansville Police Department says the drug involved is called Suboxone. EPD says Bastain does not have a prescription for the drug. They tell us the pills are orange in color and could be alluring to a small child.

Police say the drug can be harmful and even fatal if taken by a child.

Bastain says she took the child to the hospital as soon as she realized what had happened.

Evansville police say Bastain was arrested on Tuesday. She is charged with Neglect of a Dependent and is being held on a $1,000 bond.
