Last updated on Tuesday, September 30, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana health officials say the state now has identified 19 cases of a severe respiratory illness that has sickened hundreds of children nationwide.

The Indiana State Department of Health provided no other information Friday on the where the 19 cases were located, but has said previously that four children in Lake County had been confirmed as having become sick from enterovirus D68.

The enterovirus is similar to the germ that causes the common cold. The virus can be severe in infants, children and people with underlying medical conditions such as asthma.

The health department says it's working with local health departments and hospitals to look for additional cases of the enterovirus.

Indiana and the surrounding states of Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio are among several states affected by the outbreak.
