State Fair Stage Collapse Settlement Possibly Coming Soon

Last updated on Wednesday, September 10, 2014

(UNDATED) - The civil lawsuits filed in the wake of the Indiana State Fair stage rigging collapse could be close to being settled.

A report from a mediator to the Marion Superior Court says the plaintiffs in the lawsuits and all but one of the defendants have reached agreements to settle or agreements in principle to settle.

No settlements have been finalized and the Indiana Attorney Genera's Office says discussions are continuing and the process is fluid and ongoing.

The lawsuits were filed following the collapse in August 2011 which killed seven people and injured dozens more prior to a concert at the State Fair grandstands.

RTV6 reports that a settlement is expected by the end of the year.

First, it must be determined how much money the individual victims will get.

Bryan Corbin, spokesman for Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller's office, says "having expedited the full $5 million in tort claim payments to speed relief to the victims in 2011, and having facilitated another $6 million in supplemental relief from the Legislature in 2012, the Indiana Attorney General's Office has continued to urge the private parties to put the victims first. As has been our goal from the outset, we encourage the remaining litigants to settle their issues promptly for the benefit of the victims and their families."

The parties involved in the lawsuit have not commented on the potential settlement.
