(TERRE HAUTE) - The motive behind the shooting of an Indiana State University student appeared to be gambling, according to court documents.
Both men were "rolling dice," according to the probable cause. University officials had described the shooting as an isolated incident.
Calvin McCauley, 21, was arrested on a preliminary charge of attempted murder for the shooting of Tevin Moore, 20, at the Lincoln Quad residence hall Saturday. Campus police said the men had met earlier in the day.
Moore underwent surgery for a wound to the buttocks and was expected to make a full recovery. Investigators said Moore was shot in the stairwell of the residence hall but did not initially offer full cooperation to detectives.
Moore's level of cooperation improved on Sunday, according to police.
McCauley made his initial court appearance Monday. He's being held without bond and was issued a "no contact" order with Moore.
Indiana State University officials released the following statement Monday:
Immediate, temporary separation of both students from the university has been taken to ensure community safety, pending outcomes of student disciplinary processes. No final disciplinary action has been taken with regard to either student.
With regard to the student accused of shooting another student, disciplinary processes are underway for that action. With regard to the student who was shot, disciplinary processes are underway concerning other violations of campus rules and regulations.
Once internal processes have been concluded and finalized, appropriate final action will be taken with regard to each student.
