Indiana Officer Dies Two Days After Being Shot

Last updated on Monday, September 8, 2014

(MERRILLVILLE) - A northwest Indiana police officer shot in the head while responding to a call about an evicted tenant has died.

Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force spokesman Robert Byrd says 24-year-old Merrillville officer Nickolaus Schultz was pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m. CDT at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. He had been shot Friday night.

Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey says the man believed to be the shooter, 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Byrd says Schultz and other officers were responding to a call about an evicted tenant who had apparently moved back into the condo in Merrillville, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago. Byrd says Hrnciar had been evicted from the condo in July because of a foreclosure.
