Former Notre Dame Coach Home For Sale

Last updated on Wednesday, September 24, 2014

(SOUTH BEND) - The home of Former Notre Dame Coach Knute Rockene is for sale.

Central Indiana realtor Encore Sotheby's is selling the South Bend home, with an asking price of $500,000.

WTHR reports that the home was commissioned by Rockne himself in 1929, and it was where his wake was held after he died in a plane crash in 1931. The current owners, who were friends of the Rocknes, bought the home from the Rockne estate after his widow died in 1956.

Much of the English tudor style home remains unchanged since the Rockne era. It has leaded glass windows, a limestone fireplace, wrought iron fixtures and railings and other unique, vintage features. It's on a double lot and the realtor says it's in "impeccable" condition.

The home is located in the East Wayne Street Historic district, just a few miles from the University of Notre Dame's campus and downtown South Bend.

Rockne earned his fame coaching the Fighting Irish football team for 13 years. His record includes 105 wins and three national championships. His unexpected death in an airplane crash shocked the country. Tens of thousands attended his wake and funeral.
