Delaware Co. Deputy Arrested After Drunk Driving And Causing Crash

Last updated on Monday, September 15, 2014

(MUNCIE) - A veteran Delaware County sheriff’s deputy was drunk when he caused an accident Saturday that injured two other people plus himself, according to authorities.

Todd Daily, a corporal with the sheriff's department, was under guard Saturday night at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He is expected to recover, and will be taken to the Delaware County as soon as he is released from the hospital.

Daily was driving his GMC Yukon westbound on Ind. 32 shortly after 3:00 p.m., according to Sgt. Joe Krejsa of the Muncie Police Department, when he crashed into the rear of a car driven by 75-year-old Shirley Fisher, which was stopped behind other westbound vehicles at a red light at Country Club Road. Fisher's Chevrolet Impala was forced into the rear of a pickup truck driven by 73-year-old Ronald Wright, which in turn struck the rear of a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 43-year-old Stephanie Goodman.

Fisher, who was knocked unconscious, and Wright were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Both were treated and released by 10:30 p.m.

Daily was not on duty at the time, and was driving his personal vehicle. His blood alcohol level registered above .15, according to Sgt. Krejsa.

At last check, investigators were still trying to determine how fast Daily was driving at the time of the crash, and would be pulling the black boxes from the vehicles involved.

Witnesses apparently said Daily might have been trying to change lanes when he struck Fisher's car.

As the crash unfolded, the vehicles involved were in Liberty Township, but the impact forced them west into Muncie city limits.

Delaware County Sheriff Mike Scroggins said he had already assigned another officer from his department to launch an internal investigation into the incident.

Daily is expected to be charged with four counts of driving while intoxicated endangering a person.
