(VINCENNES) - Officials at a southwestern Indiana utility not only don’t want the groundhog to see his shadow, they don’t want to see the groundhog.
The Vincennes Water Utilities plans to begin an effort Aug. 18 to rid the Wabash River Levee of the furry rodent best known as a winter prognosticator and immortalized in the Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day."
Levee superintendent Hunter Pinnell told the Vincennes Sun-Commercial part of the recent U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' evaluation of the levee mandates that the city immediately put into place a groundhog eradication program.
The burrows created by the groundhogs can endanger the levee.
Pinnell says the traps will pose no threat to humans or other animals. The effort is expected to cost $12,000 and last about a month.
