Student Suspended After Saying "Bless You" After A Sneeze

Last updated on Friday, August 22, 2014

(DYER COUNTY, Tenn.) - There is a showdown in one Tennessee school district over the proper way to react to a sneeze.

A high school student said she was suspended just for saying "bless you." Kendra Turner is a Dyer County High School senior, and claims she was targeted for her religion.

Students in the class said many words are forbidden in the classroom -- including "bless you."

Turner's pastor said she was taught to stand for her faith.

"There were several students that were talking about this particular faculty member there that was very demeaning to them in regards to their faith," said Rev. Becky Winegardner, Turner's youth pastor.

Turner told WBBJ in Jackson, Tenn., that after she said "Bless you," the teacher responded, "We're not going to have godly speaking in my class."

School officials told Turner's parents she was suspended because she shouted "bless you" so loudly, it was a disruption to the class.
