(CROMWELL) - The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department has released more information on a shooting that left one man dead and two others seriously hurt on Monday night.
Police said the shooting happened when three men, purportedly bounty hunters, found 56-year-old Gary W. Helman, who had an active felony warrant out for his arrest.
After seeing Helman on the back deck of the house near Lake Wawasee, the bounty hunters engaged Helman and a gun battle ensued.
Police were called to the home in the 9100 block of East Doswell Drive in Cromwell around 6:50 p.m.
One of the bounty hunters was hit as was Gary Helman's twin brother Larry D. Helman. They were both taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in serious condition.
Gary Helman was found by deputies in a rear bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
No injuries were reported to the other two bounty hunters.
Monday's shooting on East Doswell Drive is the exact location of a 2009 police standoff involving Gary Helman. Police shot Helman during a 9-hour ordeal after Helman pulled a gun in an attempt to get away. Helman survived after he was shot in the leg and hip. Helman barricaded himself inside the home with his mother after sheriff's deputies attempted to serve three outstanding misdemeanor warrants.
Detectives and crime scene investigators gathered evidence and interviewed any potential witnesses. Firearms were recovered at the crime scene and were being processed for evidence.
The incident is under investigation.
