(INDIANAPOLIS) - The woman that was shot and killed early Sunday morning has been identified as 24-year-old Candice Hunter of Indianapolis.
The suspect who shot himself after exchanging gunfire with police is 22-year-old Joshua Higgins, of Indianapolis.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 6400 block of Park Central Drive West at the Hoover Park Condominiums on a report of a disturbance between a male and a female. As officers arrived to the scene, they observed a male and a female arguing at the entrance of the apartment building. The male then shot the female at point-blank range and turned toward the officers with a gun in hand. It is unknown at this time if the suspect fired shots at the officers. Both responding officers immediately returned fire and the suspect fled on foot toward the rear of the apartment building. No officers were struck or injured.
A short time later, officers heard a gunshot and a 911 call was dispatched of a male laying in the grass in the rear of the building at the officer's location. Officers located the male suspect that shot the female at the rear of the apartment building with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a possible graze wound to the shoulder.
The female victim was pronounced deceased at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The suspect was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. The identity of the suspect and the victim will not be released at this time, pending positive identification and notification to the victim's family.
The involved officers' names are not being released at this time. As is standard procedure in these types of incidents, the officers involved will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
It should also be noted that two small children belonging to the victim, under the age of two, were inside the apartment during this incident. They are currently in temporary custody with the Department of Child Services.
This is still an active investigation.
