(HAMILTON CO.) - Indiana Conservation officers are investigating an incident at the Indiana Gun Club on 113th St. in Hamilton County.
51-year-old Bradley Mendenhall of Indianapolis was injured Friday when the barrel of his firearm blew out.
Mendenhall was target shooting with his 12 gauge over-under break action shotgun when there was believed an obstruction in the top barrel which caused the side of the barrel to blow out when it was fired.
Mendenhall was shooting with his son, who was using a 20 gauge shotgun.
Mendenhall was carrying both 12 gauge and 20 gauge ammunition at the time.
While it has not been determined that this was the cause of the incident, there is an enhanced risk of barrel blow-out when carrying 20 gauge ammunition while firing a 12 gauge shotgun, as a 20 gauge shell can slide far enough down the barrel for a 12 gauge shell to be loaded behind it.
However police say the official cause is pending a laboratory examination of the firearm.
Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind all sporting arms users to always check your barrel for obstructions before loading, and to never carry any ammunition that is not designed to be fired from the firearm you are using.
