Man Charged With Murder of 4-Year-Old

Last updated on Wednesday, August 27, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis father is under arrest in connection with the death of his young son.

29-year-old Dennis Price has been charged with murder, along with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and battery on a child resulting in death. See the charges here.

Indianapolis Metro Police say the four-year-old boy, identified as Derrick Jones, was violently beaten at his home on E. 42nd St. last weekend.

Metro Police say Price called 911 Sunday after his son became unconscious. Paramedics arrived at the home and rushed Derrick Jones to the hospital, where he died from blunt force injuries all over his body.

Police learned from another child in the house that Price reportedly started beating his son after catching him in a lie.

Court documents show Price himself told detectives he used a belt on Derrick several days, gave him ibuprofen for swelling, then made him drink charcoal to vomit, thinking he had given him too much medicine.

Those same court documents say all this took place in front of the dead child's four-year-old sister, who was told to stay out of the bedroom.

The Marion County prosecutor has filed formal charges against Price, who is in the main jail awaiting his initial court hearing for felony battery and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

There is no word yet on where the child's mother was during the alleged beating. The boy's mother also lives in the home.
