(SOUTHERN IND.) - Long-term lane reductions are expected to begin next Tuesday on both Interstate 65 north and Interstate 65 south in Southern Indiana as part of the Ohio River Bridges Project Downtown Crossing.
I-65 North and I-65 South will be reduced from three through lanes of traffic to two from the Kennedy Bridge to Brown's Station Way, for nearly 1.5 miles.
Significant congestion and delays are expected during the closures from Sept. 2 until late 2016.
The shift will happen in stages over about two weeks.
The lane closures will move all interstate traffic into the area where the southbound lanes of the interstate currently run.
During the shift, the existing northbound lanes will be demolished and new lanes will be constructed to connect with the new Downtown Crossing.
After the move, there will be no direct access from I-65 N to Stansifer Avenue or Brown's Station Way.
Northbound lanes on the Kennedy Bridge will be reduced from three through lanes and an exit lane to two through lanes and an exit lane.
Southbound lanes on the Kennedy Bridge won't be affected.
Officials urge commuters to take alternate routes, allow extra time and carpool to help alleviate delays.
