(HUNTINGBURG) - Huntingburg and Wabash receive Stellar Community designations.
Huntingburg and Wabash will receive millions of dollars to help spur economic development after being named 2014 Stellar Communities.
Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann made announced Thursday at the Indiana State Fair that Huntingburg and Wabash had been chosen from among six finalists.
Decatur, Mount Vernon, Nashville and Marion also had been in the running.
The Stellar Communities program is a collaboration between the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, the Office of Community and Rural Affairs and the state Department of Transportation. Its goal is to help communities achieve long-term strategic goals for key areas.
"We are honored to be designated as a Stellar Community by the State of Indiana," says Huntingburg Mayor Denny Spinner. "The plan we put together is something that will benefit Huntingburg for years to come. We are grateful to those who specifically contributed, as well as the entire community, for all of their input and support during this process."
The two communities picked for the Stellar designation will receive up to ten million dollars to fast-track community projects.
The Dubois County Council had previously said that it would also donate half a million dollars to Huntingburg, if it got the 'Stellar Community' designation, to potentially add more housing to support the area's growing work force.
