Former Sweetser Town Marshal Behind Bars

Last updated on Saturday, August 2, 2014

(SWEETSER) - A former Sweetser Town Marshal was arrested Thursday on official misconduct charges.

33-year-old Chris Tarlton of Marion is accused of proving false information when buying a gun for an acquaintance.

State Police say Tarlton allegedly wrote an official letter to a gun supply company identifying the acquaintance as a police officer in order to buy the gun at a discounted law enforcement rate. That information was false, according to State Police.

Investigators say Tarlton was also certified as a drug recognition expert (DRE) and was required to complete two exams per year in order to remain certified. Tarlton allegedly requested that a man from Sweetser in Grant County smoke marijuana so Tarlton could perform the required exams on him. That man refused to do so.
