Fireball Erupts On Indy's Northeast Side

Last updated on Tuesday, August 19, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Authorities say a malfunction sparked an explosion and fireball that shot up over a northeast-side aluminum facility early this morning.

The incident forced the evacuation of the Mid America Extrusions plant at around two a.m.

Indianapolis Fire Department investigators say parts called "aluminum ingots" were being heated in a large, oven-like machine when something malfunctioned and caused the blast. Pressure from the blast swept upward through a vent to the roof and created the 25-foot-tall fireball.

Fire crews later put out the fire. No one was hurt.
