Atterbury Cancels Opening Day Dove Hunt

Last updated on Monday, August 4, 2014

(ATTERBURY) - The Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area has canceled its planned opening-day dove draw hunt.

Officials say that is because the sunflower crop at the area has failed. Managers considered replanting but the sunflowers would not have matured by opening of dove season. The cancellation of the draw hunt on managed fields, which had been planned for Sept. 1, will not affect general dove hunting on the property.

Atterbury will be open to dove hunting on the entire property from Sept. 1 through Oct. 19, Nov. 1-9, and Dec. 13 through Jan. 11.

Check-in is required through the self-service hunter check-in stations and a permit card must be kept on person while hunting. Non-toxic shot is required to hunt doves on all fish & wildlife areas.

The daily bag limit for doves is 25. A valid hunting license, a Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program number, and an Indiana game bird stamp are required to hunt doves.

A youth/hunt trap license includes the Indiana game bird stamp, but an HIP number is still required. You can get your HIP number at wildlife.IN.gov/3567.htm.
