12-Year-Old Steals And Crashes School Bus

Last updated on Wednesday, August 6, 2014

(BROOKSTON) - A 12-year-old boy was found behind the wheel of a school bus early Tuesday morning.

A call to White County 911 reported a short white school bus that was "all over the roadway" southbound on State Road 43 near County Road 900 South just before 3 a.m. Tuesday. A report a short time later placed the bus, which was determined to be from the Frontier School Corporation in Brookston, in Carroll County.

School officials told police the bus should not have been on the road at that hour and it should be stopped.

A half-hour later, deputies with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department reported they were following the bus north on State Road 43, approaching the White County Line. Despite activating lights and sirens, police were not able to get the bus to stop.

Deputies in White County met the bus at the county line and deployed stop sticks to try to stop the bus. After running over the sticks, the bus continued north on SR 43, turning west on 3rd Street in Brookston.

The bus then crashed into a parked truck and a residence in the 200 block of Ripley Street.

At that time, the deputies discovered the driver of the bus was a 12-year-old boy from Battleground. The child was checked by medics before being taken into custody by Tippecanoe County Sheriff's deputies. No injuries were reported.

The White County Sheriff's Department is investigating the alleged theft of the school bus and the crash.
