(INDIANAPOLIS) - Police arrested two suspects in what they called a "horrible case of child abuse."

Ja'Lyne Dawson and her boyfriend, Donald Stubbs, have been accused of beating and abusing Dawson's 2-year-old son so badly that he suffered a broken jaw, respiratory failure and a perforated intestine.

Dawson, 22, faces three felony charges of neglect of a dependent. Documents revealed the child was abused from June 25 to June 29.

According to court documents, Dawson told doctors the boy drank toilet water and shortly after that she called 911 on June 28.

Stubbs was facing seven felony charges in the case after he allegedly beat the toddler with a belt. Stubbs and Dawson were also accused of tying the boy up, court documents said.

Stubbs' young son told investigators that Stubbs hit the boy hard on his stomach and the toddler's feet and hands were tied.

Detectives said they found text messages between the suspects:

"I'll rap to you when I get back ... is he still tied," Stubbs said in a text message.

"He got his hands loose while I was sleep but he ain't move," Dawson wrote back.

Court documents revealed the victim had bruises, scratches and serious injuries all over his body, including open cuts on his chest and back. He remains at Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition.
