(CAMP ATTERBURY) - A burglary at Camp Atterbury over the weekend has resulted in the loss of an item deemed “sensitive” by military officials.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says Atterbury officials discovered, around 11:30 a.m. Monday, that building 337 had been broken into sometime over the weekend. Atterbury officials told the Sheriff's Department that the structure serves as their "Counter IED Integration Cell Building."
A report on the break-in was made Monday. It stated that an IED training aid had been thrown through the building's window, allowing access inside. The report also noted that rear door of the building was missing, an interior door was broken in half and that another door from an unknown location was found outside of the building. An inventory done at the time indicated that the only thing missing was an MPT-30 firebox.
On Tuesday, Military Police on the base were called after other items were discovered missing from the building. They included tape, tools, a tool bag, paint, power inventers and several other items. It was at this time Atterbury personnel realized how sensitive of an item the missing MPT-30 firebox is.
The website of the MPT-30 firebox manufacturer describes it as a "Battle Effects Simulator used to replicate a Road-Side Bomb, Vehicle-borne IED (VBIED), and other heavy weapons fire. It fires type classified M30 and M31A1 pyro which can realistically and safely simulate the smoke, bang and flash signatures of various weapons fire."
The Johnson County Sheriff's Department is working in conjunction with the military's Anti-Terrorism Investigation Division. Anyone with information on this theft is urged to contact the Johnson County Sheriff's Department or Camp Atterbury Military Police.
