(INDIANAPOLIS) — A 13-year-old boy escaped serious injury Thursday night in Indianapolis after he either leaped from or was pushed out of a moving car driven by a man described as a “kidnapper.”
The driver crashed the car and is in critical condition.
Officer Rafael Diaz, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said the 13-year-old escaped or fell from the car shortly after it was stolen from a gas station in eastern Indianapolis.
The driver of the white 2007 Chevrolet Malibu then got on I-70 and headed east, Diaz said. He was driving fast and was apparently attempting to get off the interstate when the car leaped a ravine at an exit and crashed.
Police never initiated a chase as the crash occurred not long after the car was reported stolen at 7:37 p.m., Diaz said.
Hancock County and Cumberland police, responding to the report of the crash, made the connection to the car reported stolen, Diaz said.
Medics transporting the boy to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health described scrapes and bruises that appeared not to be serious.
The car's driver sustained massive injuries. The driver was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, Diaz said.
