(BREVARD CO., Fla.) - An Indiana boy’s last taste of summer started with him being rushed to the hospital.
The EMTs who took care of 8-year-old Aayden Crick at the beach in Brevard County, Fla., told his family a shark likely bit him even though he was standing in just three feet of water for what family said was only five minutes. No one could say what kind, though, because it all happened so fast.
"It's been my biggest fear and I didn't have any fear going out there that that would happen. I talked to him more about riptides and things like that," said Crick's mother, Michelle Jarman. "He's more likely to win the lottery than get bit by a shark."
"It, like, knocked me down and bit me and then it was gone," recalled Crick.
"He screamed and when I turned back around to look at him, he was down in the water gripping his leg, and I ran to him," added Jarman. "He was just right there and I pulled him up and he was missing the bottom part of his-- little part of his knee."
Turns out, Brevard County has the second highest number of shark attacks in Florida, according to the International Shark Attack File. A woman was bitten in the leg by a shark there in May on Melbourne Beach. Only one in the county has been fatal, though, in more than a 100 years.
"I had no idea, or we wouldn't have been there," Jarman said.
If his recovery goes well, Crick and his family are set to come home to Frankfort Friday.
For his part, Crick said it will be a while before he's ready to go back in the water. When he gets back to school, though, his summer vacation story will be hard to top.
