(EVANSVILLE) - The Vanderburgh County Health Department says West Nile has been found in Evansville.

Health officials say two sample pools of mosquitoes collected within the City of Evansville have tested positive for the virus.

So far this summer there have been 13 counties in Indiana with positive sample pools.

The Vanderburgh County Health Department will be performing focused adult mosquito control in the area where West Nile activity has been found.

The spraying will be within an area bound by Harriet St., Tennessee St., N. Garvin St., and Franklin St.

Officials say the operation will take place July 30. Fogging will begin around at 8:00 p.m. and finish by 12:00 a.m.

The Health Department is asking residents to:

Limit time outdoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Wear light colored clothing, pants, and long sleeves when possible.

Use insect repellant containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. (Products containing DEET should not be used on infants aged <2 months of age and those containing Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus should not be used on infants <3 years of age); and

Make sure your property is free of any standing water, which could be breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry the virus. Empty flowerpots, buckets, old tires, trash cans, and clogged gutters. Keep the grass cut and landscaping trimmed as adult mosquitoes use overgrown areas as safe places to rest.
