Bicyclist Struck And Killed In Cicero, Driver Flees

Last updated on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

(CICERO) - A bicyclist was struck and killed Monday night in Cicero.

Police were called to the area of Main and Neal streets shortly after 9:30 p.m. on the report of a bicyclist found on the side of the road. The cyclist, 20-year-old Nicholas Camp, was taken to Riverview Hospital, then was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital by helicopter, where he later died of his injuries.

According to investigators, Camp was riding south on Main Street when the left handlebar of his bicycle was struck by a passing vehicle, causing him to lose control and crash. He was found with his bicycle on top of him, suffering from a severe head injury.

Police say Camp was not wearing a helmet.

The vehicle that struck Camp left the scene, but police believe the driver may not know they struck the cyclist. The vehicle would have been traveling south on Main Street between Neal Street and Buckeye Street around 9:30 p.m. and may have damage to the passenger-side mirror or side of the vehicle.

Anyone with information about the vehicle should call Hamilton County Sheriff's Department at 317-776-4106.
