Suspect Arrested In Southern Johnson County Burglary

Last updated on Monday, June 16, 2014

(JOHNSON CO.) - Johnson County deputies have caught a suspect in a string of burglaries in the southern part of the county after a search for a suspicious vehicle.

Sheriff Doug Cox said deputies have been looking for a black Oldsmobile Bravada since Tuesday, when a homeowner reported the vehicle at her home. The male driver seemed suspicious, asked if she had a car for sale, and when she said she didn't, the driver left the scene .

Maj. Bob Sexton found the vehicle near County Roads 225W and 300S just after noon Thursday. The driver fled at speeds of up to 80 mph, dodging oncoming traffic, ignoring traffic lights and driving the wrong way up streets, Cox said.

He was eventually stopped in Marion County after officers blew out his tires and spun out his car by nudging it with a police vehicle. A search of his vehicle revealed items stuffed into a guitar case and pillow case. Those had allegedly been stolen from a home near where the vehicle was first sighted.

54-year-old John L. Gibson of Indianapolis was arrested on felony charges of burglary, theft, resisting law enforcement, possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, and driving a vehicle without ever having a driver's license.

Police are going to be showing photos of Gibson to witnesses from other burglaries in the area and more charges are expected.
