Search Halted For Two Missing Lake Michigan Boaters

Last updated on Tuesday, June 3, 2014

(CHICAGO) - An official says the Coast Guard has stopped searching for two people who jumped from a boat in Lake Michigan because they are presumed dead.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Levi Read says the 1,600 square-mile search was called off Sunday night, more than 15 hours after a fisherman pulled a woman from the water. She died soon after.

A man who was pulled from the water remains hospitalized. He has told authorities that four people jumped from the boat early Sunday.

Read says the Coast Guard calls off searches when it is determined that people could not have survived. He explains that the water temperature of Lake Michigan is in the low 60s and that a person could not survive such temperatures for more than six hours.
