Pence Convenes Conference To Explore State's Tax Structure

Last updated on Wednesday, June 25, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Gov. Mike Pence is hosting a conference Tuesday aimed at making Indiana’s tax structure more attractive for businesses and individuals.

Pence, the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Revenue are hosting the Indiana Tax Competitiveness and Simplification Conference at the Indiana Government Center.

The conference brings together nearly 200 local and national tax experts and policy makers to "focus on ways to create a more competitive business and individual tax climate" in the Hoosier State.

Pence called the conference "an excellent opportunity to examine our tax structures and find ways to make them simpler and more competitive." He hopes to attract "fresh ideas" and "best practices" for taxation.

The conference will include two presentations and seven panels that will examine Indiana's tax structure.

Indiana House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath, Michigan City, criticized the conference in a statement Tuesday morning, saying the middle class was left out of the proceedings. He called the conference "nothing more than a class club meeting" of business insiders and economic thinkers.
