(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Charter School Board approved Monday a charter for a new school aimed to help students who are going through the juvenile justice system.
Indianapolis Deputy Mayor of Education Jason Kloth says the Francis Marion Academy will serve students within the Juvenile Detention Center where they can continue working toward their high school diploma. There will also be a school outside the Juvenile Detention Center where students, as part of their probation, can go on to earn their diploma or technical certification.
Kloth says the school comes as the result of a bipartisan effort from judges in Marion County. He says they were eager to put together a program to better serve students coming through the juvenile justice system.
Kloth says this program is unique to Indianapolis.
The school will get going within the next year just within the Juvenile Detention Center. He says the following year is when the school outside the detention center will begin.
