Last updated on Thursday, June 12, 2014

(UNDATED) - The price of certain medical tests and services varies greatly across the country, according to a new survey.

Castlight Health ranked the most and least expensive cities for common medical services, and if you have high cholesterol in Indiana, you'll likely pay more.

The average cost of a lipid panel in Indianapolis is $90, which is the highest in the nation. It's four times the cost of the same test in Pittsburgh. The range of the price of a lipid panel in Indy also ranges from $15 to $200, depending on the provider.

CT scans in Sacramento come in at over $1,404, and in Seattle the scan is only $611. Indianapolis ranks 25th in CT scan costs at $667.

An MRI will cost you over $2,600 in Sacramento and just over $900 in Seattle, and over $1,100 in Indy.

And an adult preventive primary care visit's average price is the most expensive in San Francisco at $250, and the cheapest in Miami at $95. The cost of that visit in Indy averages $138.

Recommendations to save money include using national laboratory groups for blood tests and to try independent stand-alone imaging centers for x-rays, MRI's and CT scans.
