Lilly Announces Insulin Manufacturing Expansion

Last updated on Tuesday, June 3, 2014

(UNDATED) - Eli Lilly and Company is moving forward with the expansion of its global insulin manufacturing in Indy.

The $400 million project is part of Lilly's worldwide plan to invest $1 billion in response to the growing diabetes epidemic.

Lilly Director of State Government Affairs Michael O'Connor says it's Lilly's first manufacturing expansion in Indiana in 20 years.

O'Connor says the facility will make cartridges for insulin pins. He says the cartridges have all been made outside of the U.S. in the past.

The facility is located at the Lilly Tech Center South at Kentucky and McCarty Streets in downtown Indianpolis.

O'Connor says one of the manufacturing lines is almost complete. He says FDA approval is still needed. He adds the facility will employ about 100 people, though not all of the jobs will be new jobs.

No word yet on when the facility will begin actual operation.
