(INDIANAPOLIS) - Wider sidewalks, more bicycle parking, better access to green space--not necessarily the things you think of when you hear the word rezoning.

But, that's a big part of what Indianapolis is getting ready to do for the first time in nearly half a century. It's called Indy Rezone and you have a chance to give your input.

Indy ReZone has been more than two years in the making, but revising Indy's zoning ordinances is something that hasn't been done since the 1970s. Today, the city's division of planning is holding open houses to reveal the changes. Among them--improving the way you can bike and walk in the city.

After many surveys and research, some of the things people like best about Indy is that it has a walkable downtown, pedestrian pathways, rails to trails and the ability to bike on city sidewalks. But, things that people want to see change-- more bike parking and more pedestrian and bike friendly areas outside the downtown. The planning office says that's a big part some of the changes they're making.

"What we're going to do is we're going to include additional provisions for bicycle parking at particular uses. We're making special accommodations for how buildings front toward the sidewalk in some of our special districts we're going to create all with the idea of making it a more usable sidewalk," said John Neal, Senior Planner.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development--HUD, is providing a grant to help Indy become more liveable and sustainable through things like bikability and walkability.

If you'd like to get a guided tour of some of the major changes to the city's zoning plans, you can check out the big reveal today from 11:30am-2pm or from 5pm-8pm at the Athenaeum at 401 E. Michigan St.

You'll also be able to read to draft of changes online at, which you can access through Hot Topics.
