IMPD Recruits To Be Sworn In On Monday

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Public Safety Director Troy Riggs and Metro Police Chief Rick Hite are expected to swear-in IMPD’s 9th Recruit Class this afternoon.

Riggs says this comes as officers are seeing bolder and better-armed crime suspects than in the past. Riggs says 88% of suspects are involved in the drug trade and have criminal histories. He adds that as summer approaches, the city is becoming more strategic in how it assigns officers and patrols communities.

The city says the 60 new recruits are 47 males, 11 females, 60% white, 28% black and 12% Hispanic. Two more recruits are pending.

The recruits must still go through their year-long training period before receiving patrol assignments. Riggs says they don't expect all recruits to make it through the grueling training period, but most likely will.
