Hendricks County Car Break-Ins Likely Tied To Morgan County Crimes

Last updated on Friday, June 6, 2014

(BROWNSBURG) - A string of car break-ins at parks in the Brownsburg area over the weekend are believed to be connected to another rash of break-ins in Morgan County, according to police.

Investigators found a pattern between all of them: smash-and-grab hits right in broad daylight.

"How could they go unnoticed? That's what's so scary," said Kim Shambaugh. "We were all right here and it happened right under our noses."

Shambaugh was sitting on a park bench watching her daughter play in the park Saturday night when, 100 feet behind her, someone was breaking into her car without her hearing or seeing a thing.

"There was a police officer circling and he informed me that there had been several break-ins in cars," said Shambaugh. "Glass was all over the inside of the car, the outside of the car. If they want in, they're going to get in."

Shambaugh's car was locked and nothing was inside so nothing was taken, except for maybe Shambaugh's peace of mind at a park she's enjoyed her entire life.

"I remember coming here 30 years ago and playing, so to have that sense of security and a little bit of that joy taken away, it does feel like more than just my car was violated; A part of my history, a part of my innocence, what I look forward to doing - they kind of took some of that."

Thieves took purses, wallets, credit cards and money from the other cars, according to police, so Shambaugh said she feels like the lucky one.

"Fortunately, we were all safe and nothing... nobody was hurt but it's a scary feeling, especially in Brownsburg," said Shambaugh. "You bring your kids to the park, you think you're having a great afternoon and then something like this happens."
