FBI: Laser Pointing At Planes On The Rise

Last updated on Wednesday, June 4, 2014

(UNDATED) - It’s against federal law, but the FBI says the number of laser strikes at aircraft in Indianapolis alone are way up.

Laser strikes involve people pointing lasers at planes.

The FBI reports 65 laser strikes in Indy in 2013. That's up 47% from 2012. Nationwide in 2013, there were 3960 laser strikes reported.

The FAA says shining hand held lasers at planes, especially into the cockpit, can temporarily blind pilots and endanger the safety of those on board.

Federal law makes pointing lasers at planes a felony that carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
